Natchez-Trace ParkwayI had only heard about the Trace a few months ago via a bike forum and thought it might be interesting to ride one day. Months later, I was given the opportunity to check out the Trace on my way up to Port Gibson. The Natchez- Trace Parkway is popular for cyclists and bicycle tourists as well as campers and scenic viewers. I must say I am very disappointed to find that it is just another road. True, it is scenic and mostly peaceful however, I am surprised that it is popular for cyclists as there are a number of concerns that I came across while riding the Trace. First, I want to mention that the speed limit is 50. While many drivers drove less then the speed limit there were a number that drove above 50. Commercial vehicles are not allowed on the Trace which is a plus but I think 50 is a bit steep. Second, no paved shoulder. Most of Mississippi's roads do not have shoulders anyway. This being the Trace, a popular cyclist spot, I would have thought a wide paved shoulder would be standard especially with the 50 mile per hour speed limit. Third, water is a rare commodity. I fully expected there to be water stations about every 15 miles. Even water pumps would be better then nothing! Fourth, this Trace was at one time a well traveled foot path with Inns and bunk houses. Imagine if it had cheap hostels and food stands along the roadway. Maybe even a few farmers markets from nearby towns. If the Trace went back to it's roots it could be an incredible experience for young and old and a bit more historical. |
